NBC Fall Preview | 2012

Go On

I’m a little apprehensive because as we’ve seen in the past, Matthew Perry can’t seem to carry his own show. However, some of the best comedies are the ones that deal with very real and depressing issues. In this case, a man trying to move on from the death of his wife. This is probably the best we’ve seen Matthew Perry in a long time. This looks legitimately touching and funny.

B+

The New Normal

I’m not sure what this show will do for stereotypes of gay men and black women, as it seems to want to capitalize not only on the success of Modern Family, but the inundation of behavior for minorities that will likely pick up where Will and Grace left it. That said, this does look legitimately clever and ballsy, especially for NBC. Here’s hoping Ryan Murphy can use the half hour comedy format to his potential.

B+

Animal Practice

As much as I like Justin Kirk, Tyler Labine and animals, this looks extremely juvenile and not very creative. This will likely get people to tune in for a minute because of the animal gimmick, but ultimately seems like it will go nowhere and get stale fast.

C+

Guys With Kids

This looks unwatchable, though clearly NBC is trying to garner the success of such laugh track sitcoms on CBS. Newsflash, it’s not going to work with this.

D-

Revolution

I’m a little apprehensive about any TV show involving JJ Abrams, as he seems to be one of the most inconsistent men in TV in the last five years or so. However, this seems very intriguing and much better on screen than it read on paper. I can only hope this doesn’t turn into an overly family friendly and poorly written Terra Nova part two.

B+

Chicago Fire

I’m not impressed at all. It’s the easiest type of drama and not creative in any way. Let’s show a bunch of explosions and fire and throw-away generic lines and action shots. I’m not buying any of it. It looks like a much lesser and unrealistic version of Rescue Me.
